Press Release
AMBER <tm>
Avatar Partners, a virtual reality software and consulting firm based
in Boulder Creek California, has developed Amber<tm> an object
oriented extension to Sense8 Corporation's WorldToolKit<tm> virtual
reality Application Programmers Interface. Until now, virtual reality
developers had to choose between the power of object oriented
programming in C++ and the rendering performance of WorldToolKit<tm>.
Using Amber<tm>, virtual reality application developers can now have
the best of both worlds.
The alpha version of Amber<tm> provides WorldToolKit<tm> users with
access to C++ and includes the fundamental base classes of the
Amber<tm> class hierarchy. The specific features of the alpha release
include:
* C++ classes providing access to all
WorldToolKit<tm> functionality.
* Separation of object behavior and appearance
allowing for separate inheritance of object appearances
and behaviors.
* Distribution of rendering and simulation over multiple
computers.
* Support for multi-user virtual environments using serial
communications.
* Classes supporting simulation of gravity, springs, and
other elements of physics based modeling.
The goal of Amber<tm> is to provide virtual reality developers and
space makers with a set of reusable components from which to construct
complex interactive environments and distributed simulations.
Amber<tm> is currently being used by Avatar in a variety of
applications including the development of a simulation tool for the
United States Army Tank and Automotive Command.
Amber<tm> is not just another developer's tool kit, but is a library
of reusable C++ components which will be available as a complete
package or separately in "class bundles". As a result Amber<tm> users
will be able to purchase only the classes which they need for a
specific application. Future Amber<tm> class bundles will include:
* six degree of freedom flight simulation
* guidance and control algorithms and displays
* reconfigurable gauges, dials, and other virtual displays
* tools for constructing and controlling intelligent agents
Licensed Amber<tm> developers will be able to sell class bundles which
they develop through Avatar's developers program. These class bundles
will be available as part of Avatar's product catalog and will be
given equal status to bundles developed by Avatar.
The alpha release of Amber<tm> is available now and will begin
shipping in July. Amber<tm> is available for an introductory price of
$495, and there are no additional run-time licensing fees for
applications developed with Amber<tm>. In addition, purchasers of the
alpha release of Amber<tm> will receive two free upgrades. Amber<tm>
is currently available only for Intel 80486 and Pentium<tm> based
systems, and requires WorldToolKit<tm> version 2.0, Metaware High
C/C++ version 3.04 or higher, and at least one SPEA Fire board.
